What to Tell Your Treating Doctor

Question:
What should I tell my doctor after an accident?
Answer:
At your very first visit you want to make sure to give an accurate history of the accident to your doctor. Make sure you tell them every single thing that happened to you, and make sure to be as accurate as possible. For example, if you hit your head on the back of the headrest, if you hit your head on the side of the vehicle, if you hit your face on the steering wheel, it’s extremely important to tell the doctor exactly what happened to you and the mechanics of the injury.
The second thing you want to make sure to do is give them is an accurate medical history. If you’ve been injured in the past, even if it does not relate to your current injuries, you want to make sure to tell them, especially if it does relate to your current injuries. If you’ve had back problems in the past, you want to make sure that you give the doctor an accurate history – it’s extremely important.
The third thing is to tell them – and be very extremely specific – what your current complaints are. If you have pain in your neck, your lower back, make sure to say exactly where. If you have pain radiating down into your arm, you want to make sure that you absolutely tell them that. You want to tell them every single symptom that you’re experiencing, no matter how small, and you want to be as specific as possible.
